Anything that uses a medium as a form of self-expression or appeals to man’s aesthetic sense can be called art. Although we often associate art with paintings, sculptures and other creations that can be displayed in a museum, the arts actually encompass so much more than these. Paintings, sculptures, woodworks, drawings and murals are only one type of art: the visual arts. Another type of art called the literary arts, also known as the arts of written work, includes poems, short stories, novels, etc. Still another type of art is the performing arts. The performing arts include play, drama, theater, music, magic shows, etc.
In the performing arts, the artist himself is the medium of expression—his face, his body and movement, his voice, his stage presence. This work of art therefore cannot exist separate from its artist. It involves an artist or a performer staging a show of talent in front of an audience, which he seeks to please.
